What Are Aircraft Pressure Hoses?

Aircraft are designed with a wide range of parts and components that ensure they remain operable for long periods of time. Apart from aviation-grade fasteners, flight control surfaces, and navigation instruments, aircraft are equipped with pressure hoses. From light to twin-aisle, wide-body aircraft, a majority of aircraft feature them in their construction.

While aircraft pressure hoses may look like conventional fluid-carrying hoses, they are specially-designed for use with pressurized systems. Pressure systems consist of an area where the air is higher or lower than the air around it. They can range from small, unheated, low-pressure laboratory setups to large, high-pressure heated metal vessels like aircraft.

Pressure hoses used in aircraft must be heavy-duty in nature, allowing them to withstand a high amount of pressure. Generally, this quantity is measured in pounds per square inch (PSI), with some variation handling anywhere from 1,000 to 3,000 PSI. That being said, the durability of pressure hoses is highly-dependent on their material composition.

Beyond their use in aircraft, pressure hoses are used in an array of other applications. For example, they are often utilized for motor oil in the automotive industry. More specifically, when a particular motor is turned off and not running, the motor oil is not usually pressurized. However, once it begins to run, the oil begins to heat up. As the temperature of the motor oil increases, the pressure will increase as well.

In addition to motor oil, pressure hoses are frequently used for coolant. Keep in mind that a majority of motors have their own liquid cooling system. The term “coolant” is used to describe the water-based liquid found in these cooling systems. Typically, coolant flows through the motor, and once it gathers heat, it makes its way to the radiator. This is achieved because pressure hoses are used to connect motors to radiators.

Due to the role pressure hoses play in numerous systems, selecting the proper pressure hoses for your applications is paramount. The first thing you must consider is the PSI rating of your pressure hoses. As mentioned previously, some types can withstand more pressure than others; thus, the PSI rating will inform how much pressure your pressure hose can support.

It is also critical that you choose a pressure hose of the right size. For instance, you must look at the diameter of the inner tube to ensure that it matches that of the outlet with which you intend to connect it to. Furthermore, you should consider the length of the pressure hose, ensuring that they are long enough to connect your equipment together.

As we covered earlier, pressure hoses must be made of durable materials. Steel wire braid are one of the more popular options because they are strong and flexible. In fact, they can be bent without the fear of puncturing the inner tube. More than that, they do not experience damage from being exposed to oil.
